 In this update we added some new species and more English common names of fish and invertebrates!

As a new feature you can now add own picture to every item in the database. At the moment you could only add picture from the iPhone camera itself. The picture is shown in landscape modus – of course also available for “My Aquarium”

Now you can show “Your Aquarium” with pictures of your fishes!

Now more than 2070 species are included, mostly freshwater fish and invertebrates.

Beneath photos of female now those of juvenile are added to some species – of course their number will increase also!

Now you can select between cm and inch, litres and gallons and Celsius and Fahrenheit!

Following the Apple standard for searching there are different options in the search field in different areas of ALex.

The easiest way to search for a species is on the home page of ALex. Type in a scientific or a common name or (which is sometimes much better:) a part of the name of the species your are looking for. ALex will search the complete database for this species. The results are shown in a list.

In every section unlike “Home”  you can search only beyond the shown species, i.e. if you have chosen “Cichlids” the search is done within the cichlids.

In the ALex-App you can configure several aquariums with the parameters your aquarium has in reality. This configuration can be used to search for suitable species in the database.

To add a new aquarium go to the My Aquarium section and touch the “+”-button on right top. A new aquarium is added to the list. While touching the >-Button you come to the selection for setting data for the maintenance of your aquarium.

After touching the edit-Button you can name your aquarium and add a picture of it

One touch on the Filter button sets the actual date as the date of your last filter maintanance, one touch on the Water Change button acts the same way. Now you can select the period of each water change and filter maintenance.
ALex will remind you look after your aquarium!

Next you can add size of your aquarium and water parameters for temperature and pH. These data are important for selecting suitable species.

Touching the Edit-button in the right upper corner you can change the name of this aquarium and add a picture of it.

Choose your aquarium configuration to search for suitable species

If you have made a setup  of your aquarium in the My Aquarium section you can easily find suitable species in the ALex database if you are following this instructions.

Change to

Overview
Touch the right upper button “Change Group”

Select your configured Aquarium at the bottom of the list
Touch the “Done”-button

Now you got the groups, where those species are listed, who match your aquarium configuration!

We have decided to add a new category to this blog with helpful hints for using the ALex-App – as more functions will come in the future!

So please change to “How To…” if you need help or special hints of using the ALex features.

With this update we add a large number of English common names of tropical fish. Beside changing some pictures we add several new species in the database. Mainly the catfish-group has grown to a large number of species, all l-cats with fantastic photos by Ingo Seidel are added.

Due to some request of users you now can add more than one aquarium in the “My Aquarium” section. So you have more possibilities to configure several aquariums with different parameters for searching for suitable fish in the database.

At the moment we are working on a new update for ALex, which should be available in the middle of the next month.

For all catfish enthusiasts we are proud to inform you, that all L-cat will be added! On more features for the next update we are still working, we’ll see what to come!

Beneath adding news species up to 1771 items in the database, we introduce following new features:

Male / Female

For many species you can switch between pictures of male and female on their information page. If you bring the iPhone in landscape modus you can switch between both fullscreen pictures.

Add a Fish/Photo

Many inquiries about the possibility to add own pictures to the database were sent to us. Of course we are happy to build in this new feature for you. If you touch the cross on left top in the overview section you come to the feature where you can add an own picture. Just  fill in the name of the species, your name and the photo and send it to us . After a review we will add it and show it in the next update.

The first update of ALex is now available in Itunes App Store. Version number 1.1.1 shows that it is only a smaller update with few changes.

The first number increases when a larger update with important features is available. The second is for smaller update like this from today. The last number increases if new species and pictures are added to the database.
